Ahead of this weekends return to league action where the U’s welcome Merstham to The Pilot Field, Tom Dyson-Laurie from Hastings United Radio takes a look at what to expect from this Isthmian South East fixture
The U’s have enjoyed an excellent opening to the campaign and head into the weekend sitting at
the top end of the division. Hastings have taken 12 points from their opening five league matches,
recording four victories and just one defeat, and they will be looking to continue that impressive
start in front of their home support.
Last Saturday saw Hastings take a break from league action as Bognor Regis Town visited The
Pilot Field in the FA Trophy. The sides could not be separated after 90 minutes, with the contest
finishing 1-1, before Hastings held their nerve to win 6-5 on penalties and secure their place in the
next round.
Before that and after going on a 4 game unbeaten streak, Horley Town defeated the U’s in a 3-2
victory. Hastings come into todays game sitting in third place with twelve points.
This afternoon, however the focus is firmly on Merstham.
The moatsiders have experienced a more mixed beginning to their South East Division Campaign.
Their opening four league matches produced five points, with a victory, two draws and one defeat
leaving them in the middle of the early-season table.
Merstham have shown that they are capable of picking up results away from home. They came
away from Peacehaven and Telscombe with a 2-1 victory towards the end of August, before
earning a point from a 1-1 draw against Sevenoaks Town two days later.
With Hastings looking to maintain their excellent start and Merstham searching for an important
result on the road, there is plenty at stake as the two sides meet at The Pilot Field.
